VHS tapes, once the gold standard for home video recording, are now rapidly becoming obsolete. These tapes are made of magnetic tape, which deteriorates over time due to various factors:

• Magnetic Degradation: The magnetic particles on old VHS tapes lose their alignment, leading to a decline in audio and video quality.
• Environmental Factors: Heat, humidity, and dust can accelerate the degradation process.
• Mechanical Issues: VHS tapes can become brittle and break, and VCRs, the devices used to play them, are increasingly rare and prone to malfunction.

The Impermanence of Film

• Color Fading: Over time, the cyan, magenta, and yellow dyes that make up the images in film will decay.

• Brittleness and Fragility: 16mm and 8mm film can become brittle and break over time, especially if exposed to humidity and heat. This “freeze-dried” state can happen quickly. Indeed, it’s not recommended that you even screen your old films on projectors due to the possibility of film damage, unless you’re certain that the projector has been well-maintained and is in great operating order!
• Mechanical Access: Lastly, the devices used to view film (film projectors) are a dying breed, and outdated. Access to amateur film projectors gets harder and harder each year – meaning you have no way to watch these valuable family home movies anymore even if the films themselves are in decent shape.

With a shelf life of about 70 years even under ideal storage conditions, you’re simply playing a waiting game with vintage, family home-movie films. “Here today, gone tomorrow” applies to family home movies. This will help to organize your project with us. We’ve never had an issue with missing packages for shipments sent to us using tracking, so you can rest assured your materials will be cared for.

Question #2) I can’t play my tapes anymore and I don’t know what’s on them, can ARS help?

Absolutely. In addition to providing a digital conversion service, ARS offers Media Recovery Services for damaged tapes that have grown susceptible to the wear-and-tear of time. Over time, tapes accumulate dust which leads to mold and causes the magnetic strip inside to deteriorate.

The majority of the time, we can correct the following issues on old tapes:

• video skips
• deleted portions of the tape
• color corrections
• exposure issues
• and more!

Question #3) How much do your conversion services cost?

At ARS, we know everybody’s situation and materials are unique. That’s why we charge per foot for film and per hour of tape rather than per tape or reel, to get you the best deal possible. Each service comes with a free DVD or USB drive, and we’ll keep your files on location as well in case you ever need a backup.

The rates for each digital conversion service are:

• Film = $.44 /ft
• Video Tape = $23 /per hour
• Audio = $25 /per hour
