Super 8 and 8mm film have long been cherished mediums for capturing family and creative memories. Their distinct grainy texture and signature color grading evoke an unparalleled sense of nostalgia. These small film reels encapsulate family vacations, birthdays, weddings, and countless other personal moments. But, as time marches forward, these invaluable reels face the threat of degradation.

The Downside of Time

Despite the nostalgic moments they encapsulate, Super 8 and 8mm film are not immune to wear and tear. Prolonged storage, especially in sub-optimal conditions, leaves them prone to:

Color Fading: Those once-vivid hues on the film can become muted, causing memories to seem distant.

Scratches: Physical damage can manifest as visible scratches, disrupting the movie film experience.

Mold: Films stored in damp environments might become moldy. This not only harms the original film but might be a health hazard during projection.

Breathing New Life into 8mm and Super 8 Film via Digitization and More

The digital revolution has ushered in tools to revitalize your old movie treasures:

Restoration Software: At ARS Video, our professionals are equipped with the top software to digitize 8mm film and rejuvenate your old footage. We scan each frame of your film, frame-by-frame, to High Definition video files for superlative viewing.

Color Recalibration: We refresh faded colors and restore the brilliance of those memories. Contemporary digital tools can tweak hues, contrast, and luminosity to mirror the original scene.

Scratch & Grain Management: Using specific filters, our team can mitigate scratches and moderate grain to bolster clarity without betraying the film’s authentic vibe.

Background Music/Soundtracks: We currently offer our customer the option to add appropriate background music to your silent films (all Regular 8mm film was silent and 97% of Super 8 was also silent). If there is audio on your Super 8 film, we can capture that as well.

It’s pivotal to strike a balance when digitizing 8mm film. Retaining the nostalgic essence of the original film while elevating its visual quality is key. An overly refined video might strip it of its cherished ambiance.

To begin the digital conversion process, simply visit our shipping and payment page and download a free packing slip to mail in your old footage, or drop it off at our store if you are local. Our team will review your footage and give you a free estimate before digitizing anything. Once your materials have been converted to a digital format and placed on a flash drive, we’ll return them to you and keep a backup copy of everything on-site in case anything happens to the original.

Innovative Horizons: Once Digitized, What’s Next?

After the Super 8 and 8mm film transfer to a digital format, a spectrum of creative avenues beckons:

Digital Anthologies: Seamlessly blend multiple Super 8 or 8mm film reels into one digital narrative, ideal for family keepsakes.

Merging Eras: Intermix snippets from a Super 8 or 8mm film reel with new-age digital footage, creating a touching montage of then and now.

Artistic Endeavors: Incorporate old film clips in art installations, music videos, or stage backdrops. Marrying vintage with modern is increasingly popular in artistic domains.

Family Chronicles: Document your family’s passage through time by juxtaposing digitized footage with photos, tales, and documents, solidifying the legacy for upcoming generations.

Do you have stacks of old 16mm film reels collecting dust somewhere? You’re not alone. Whether it’s a home movie or a more professional project from the past, your film is filled with nostalgia and history–and it shouldn’t be left to deteriorate. That’s why we at ARS Video offer services to digitize 16mm film, among other formats like 8mm film, Super 8 film, and 35mm film. Follow along as we delve into why you should consider film digitization and what the process entails.

Why Digitize 16mm Film?

There are a few reasons why film digitization for your old film is a good idea:

Longevity: Make Sure Your Precious Memories Last
Old film reels are vulnerable to many environmental factors such as humidity, temperature fluctuations, and even physical wear and tear and filmic decay. By opting for a 16mm film conversion to a digital format, you ensure the longevity of these precious memories.

A Unique Gift: From Film Reel to Flash Drive
Your old film reel may capture moments that are priceless for you and your loved ones. Why not transfer that footage to a flash drive and create a unique, heart-warming gift?

Declutter Your Space: Out with the Reel, In with the Digital File
16mm film reels can take up a significant amount of physical space. By converting these into a digital file, you’re essentially converting a room full of reels into something that fits on a thumb drive. Talk about efficiency!

Easy Viewing Access

Reel-based film projectors are rapidly becoming antiques – even cinemas use digital projectors today instead of reel-to-reel systems. If you have an old reel projector system, you know how long it takes to set-up, as well as the space needed for the projector screen, etc. With today’s very easy and convenient flash drive-based media files, you simply plug the USB drive into your computer or TV screen and viola! – you and your family or guests are watching your recorded memories on the big flat screen or your portable laptop.

Film digitization just makes sense.

Our Step-By-Step Digitization Process

The idea to digitize 16mm film at home may cross your mind, but the required equipment and expertise are often barriers. Here at ARS Video, we handle not just film transfers but also photo & slide digitization and color enhancement to give you the best possible digital videos and photos.

Initial Consultation: We discuss your needs and provide a free estimate. If you have 8mm film, Super 8 film, or even 35mm film, in addition to 16mm film, those can be included too.

Delivery to Us: Drop off your film reels at our store or mail them to us securely using a packing slip from our website.

Film Transfers and More: We perform the 16mm film digitization with options for color correction and sound restoration. Yes, our advanced technology enables us to transfer the original sound as well.

Return of Assets: Once the digital transfer is complete, we can return the digital files to you on a USB flash drive. If you prefer a different digital format, such as a specific video file, or on a DVD, that’s possible too.

Additional Services: More Than Just Film Digitization
Our services aren’t limited to film conversion. We also offer photo digitization services and can handle other formats like audio tape to ensure all your memories, not just your home movie reels, are safely preserved.

Choosing ARS Video to Digitize 16mm Film

At ARS Video, we offer high-quality digital transfers, ensuring your footage is as clear as your memories. Whether it’s a 16mm film reel, an 8mm home movie, or even an audio tape, we can convert it.

As a family-run film digitization/conversion service, we understand the sentimental value of your home movie film and treat it with the utmost care. Your digitized film will be returned to you in an easily accessible digital format, such as a USB drive, which you can easily plug and play to relive those precious memories for generations to come!

Preserving and accessing treasured media in old formats is more important now than ever before. Every video tape, photo, and film reel is going digital in our modern age of technology and – like most technological trends – you either hop on board or get left behind.

Film digitization protects the value and nostalgia of your cherished memories by preserving them for you and your loved ones to relive years down the line. And not just for memories either – old “analog” film, art film projects, sports coverage, speeches, graduations …. Any recorded event put down on film is in danger of decaying past the point of viewability at some point. Not to mention these Regular 8, Super 8, 16MM and 35MM film reels are getting harder to play as the equipment is no longer repairable. Below are four reasons why you should really begin the film digitization process for your old film now.

Breathing New Life into Vintage Media

Film digitization is an incredible tool that gives life to old media. It transforms the films that have been lying in your attic or collecting dust in a closet into a format that can be conveniently accessed, shared, and enjoyed on your computer, TV, or even your smartphone. Whether these are reels of a wedding from the ’60s, a historical family documentary from the 60s, or your childhood home movies from the 70s, we ensure that these film recordings get a digital facelift for use with today’s technology. By digitizing your old media, we convert them into DVDs or onto flash drives containing High Definition digital files – allowing you to revisit them at any time and on any modern device.

Quality Preservation

Physical film, tapes, and slides degrade over time naturally and through exposure to various environmental conditions. They can become discolored, scratched, or completely damaged, making the media content inaccessible and unwatchable. Film digitization ensures that these memories are preserved in their best quality digitally with no more decay possible.

Safeguarding the Past for the Future

Film digitization is more than just a method for modernizing old media; it’s a means of safeguarding our collective history. Our digital conversion process ensures that important historical moments, cultural insights, or simple memories caught on film aren’t lost to time. Instead, these pieces of the past become ready for future generations to explore and learn from, thus keeping our history alive and vibrant. Through film digitization, your old recordings become time capsules that can be passed down for generations to come!

Sharing Made Easy

The beauty of film digitization is the ease with which you can now share these once-inaccessible moments. Digitized files can be shared with friends via email, with family members who live far away via the Cloud, or even uploaded on to social media platforms for mass viewing. The joy of watching an old family film or sharing a piece of history is just a click away, thanks to digitization.

Film Digitization at ARS Video

Film digitization opens up new possibilities for old film reels. Once digitized, you can edit the content and add audio and titles – offering more ways to enjoy your old films. It’s even possible to integrate the content into new media forms like digital photo albums, multimedia presentations, or video montages for special events.

At ARS Video, we recognize the immense value that film digitization and digital conversion offer. It’s not just about adapting to the digital era, but about preserving your past that was painstakingly recorded and making it readily available in your present. It’s about ensuring that no memory, moment, or historical event captured on film gets lost to time, but instead finds new life through the magic of modern film digitization technology.

Let’s get together and bring your past into the future with ARS Video’s film digitization services! Contact our team or send us your old films to get started converting your memories into a digital format today.

Traditional film has become a relic of the past, leaving smartphones and digital cameras as everyone’s first choices when they need to capture a moment in time. However, many of us still possess treasured memories captured on 35mm film that we would like to preserve and share in the digital realm. With ARS Video’s digital conversion services, we can convert 35mm film to digital and ensure that those precious moments are not lost to time.

Introducing 35mm Film Slides and Negatives

35mm film is a photographic film format that has a rich history. It refers to the width of the film strip, which measures approximately 35 millimeters. Developed in the late 19th century, 35mm film revolutionized the world of photography, bringing a new level of convenience and flexibility compared to earlier bulky and cumbersome formats.

35mm slides reached their peak popularity in the 1960s because of their quality and convenience. Later slide formats like the 126 slide, 110 slides, and 127 slides were never as successful as the 35 mm slide.

The initial appeal of 35mm film lies in its ability to capture images with remarkable clarity and detail. With its wide dynamic range and fine grain structure, 35mm film produces images that are often described as having a distinct and timeless quality. That being said, film quality deteriorates over time. While 35mm film may have been at the top of its game back in the day, the only way to ensure your precious memories stay truly timeless is to convert them.

Benefits of Converting 35mm Film

The advantages of converting 35mm film to digital are numerous. Once the film is in a digital format, cataloging, organizing, and sharing your photos becomes much easier it. Additionally, you can easily make prints or create digital photo albums by having a digital copy of your film. These digital files can also be easily backed up to prevent any loss of your precious memories.

Converting your old film to digital also allows for easier restoration. Over time, film can deteriorate, resulting in discoloration, dust, and other imperfections. By digitizing your film, ARS Video can easily restore and enhance these images using various digital editing tools. This restoration process will preserve your old film and breathe new life into your cherished memories.

Lastly, once your film is in a digital format, it becomes much easier to share it with others. In today’s connected world, social media platforms provide an excellent avenue for showcasing and sharing your old photos. By converting your old negatives or slides to a digital image, you can upload them to social media platforms like Facebook or Instagram, ensuring that your treasured memories are appreciated by friends and family far and wide.

Converting Old Film with ARS Video

ARS specializes in converting old film to digital to preserve your photos for years to come. Our experts use professional-grade equipment and techniques to ensure high-quality results. We handle various types of film, including 35mm, 110mm, 126m, and 127mm slides and negatives.

Preserving your home movies and precious memories is our area of expertise at ARS Video, but film conversions and digitization aren’t the only specialties our team has to offer. Our film preservation services range from recovering damaged video to managing construction site photo and video footage and everything in between.

Here are the top three additional services we offer at ARS Video:

Recovering Damaged Footage

There are several types of recovery services ARS Video offers. Regarding video files and tape recovery, our team corrects moldy videotapes that have been stored in high-humidity areas by capturing the memories preserved on the damaged tape and transferring them to a High Definition 1920 x 1080 format. The updated videos are then returned to you on a USB flash drive to use on your computer or tv so you can re-live those memories on the go.

ARS Video also offers recovery services for Sticky Shed—a phenomenon that occurs in magnetic tape formats where humidity causes the tape to stick together and ruins the recording—and data recovery services using disc buffers (hard disks with memory embedded, which act as temporary storage sites for data being transferred).

For more information on how we recover damaged footage, check out our Recovery Services Page.

Archival Preservation

Memories come in all different formats. Home movies and family events aren’t the only moments to be captured on video, and with Digitize Archives, ARS Video’s division specializing in audiovisual archival digitization, museums, universities, libraries, historical societies, and more can have their videos preserved right from their archives.

Preserving the past and precious moments in history has never been easier. Go to Digitize Archives to learn more.

Pre-Construction Video Services

Pre-Construction Video Services are crucial during the mobilization phase of a construction project, and ARS Video is here to help make your dream project a reality. During this phase, ARS Video provides you with a team of experienced videographers, photographers, and a safety technician that conducts high-definition video and photo surveying. Each construction project is unique, and our team will work with your project manager to deliver seamless pre-construction video services.

In addition to proper safety gear and drone footage of your pre-construction site, ARS Video offers a comprehensive checklist with everything you’ll need to cover during your project. Check out the complete list of what you can expect from ARS Video on our Pre-Construction Video Services page.

Dear Legacybox,

RETURNED ORDERS

Over the years we have received a number of Legacybox orders that were returned to customers uncompleted by Legacybox. Some orders indicated that they were not able to be processed and other orders were simply returned without any explanation at all. ARS Video makes communication with our customers essential and we keep them informed on the status of their orders. We have handled media digitization that Legacybox turned away! In all cases we were able to digitize the film and video to High-Definition files. We delivered the files back on a USB Flash Drive that works on TVs and on Computers. The customers were happy with our service and have peace of mind because we keep a backup copy of their files. After 35 years of experience transferring priceless memories, we have identified issues that cause a difficult transfer.

MEDIA CONVERSION ISSUES IDENTIFIED

Due to the age of film and video tapes needing converted from analog to digital format, there are many levels of degradation that we have encountered. The main issue is storage – humidity and water damage cause brittle and curling damage to media, as well as mold, sticky surfaces and fungus growth that deteriorate the media. Video tapes – including professional formats like Umatic and Betacam and consumer formats like Betamax, VHS, VHS-C, Hi-8, MiniDV and others – are 20 to 50 years old now. Many tapes have mold and Sticky Tape Syndrome. These are issues where we have developed and refined processes to clean, repair, and transfer the old analog media successfully.

OUR RECOVERY & DIGITIZATION PROCESS

There are techniques available to battle these deterioration problems. With film, we can test the level of Vinegar Syndrome deterioration and use special hand cleaners and restorer solutions. We have even been able to straighten curled films. The transfer equipment is designed to gently pull the film, avoiding sprocket holes altogether. The film is over-scanned frame by frame as HD, 2K or 4K, JPG or TIF and then put to AVI files. Archival film transfers require this level of detail along with a user-access MP4 edited file. The same level of effort is applied to consumer formats – Regular 8 and Super 8 film – providing a user-access MP4 High Def 1920 x 1080P file that’s been edited and color corrected.

With video tapes, we restore the VHS tapes by “baking,” removing mold, manually splicing, cleaning and winding them. The tapes are then digitized using professional TBC and SDI systems to create High-Def 1920x1080P MP4 files. We look for and remove TV programs, ground shots (unknowingly recording the ground), and anything else for which the customer would not want to pay.

ARS VIDEO – THE FILM & VHS DIGITIZATION SOLUTION

Film stored properly can last over 100 years. We have digitized 1916 35MM film for the Holmes County Historical Society and 16MM film as old as the 1920s for university, library, corporate and government archive collections. The quality of our film restoration and conversion transfers is so good, we have been utilized in Hollywood productions! We use the same exact media recovery & digitization process to transfer your home movies since they are just as, if not more, important.

Since 1987, ARS Video, Inc has been a family-owned business operating out of Tallmadge, Ohio while serving the whole USA. We are an Archival media service provider for both consumer and institutional collections. We spend the extra time to preserve as much as is possible of priceless recorded memories, which does not seem to be the case with Legacybox. Allow us give you an estimate, and please consider giving ARS Video your Legacybox business.

Sincerely,

ARS Video, Inc

Let ARS Video Help!

For many people, photos, negatives, videos, and films of their loved ones are where all their memories are held. The idea of losing those memories is unthinkable. Fortunately, technological advances mean that these items can easily be digitized, preserving them in a convenient, safe, and shareable way.

The availability of devices that can convert film, negatives, and photographs to a digital medium may have some people thinking that this is a project they can tackle themselves. But there are several reasons why working with a reputable conversion service is ideal. Consider some benefits of using a professional company to safeguard your precious memories by making them digital.

Size Matters

Professionals use highly technical and precise equipment to convert documents, photos, negatives, film, and video to digital files. The devices available to the layman to convert digital files may be more affordable, but they may compress the size of files during conversion. This can lead to a lower resolution, fuzzier images, or – in the case of moving pictures – loss of clarity while playing. With photos, the higher the resolution, the better quality for any prints wanted in the future. Remember that sharing files will often cause further compression, so beginning with the best quality digital file possible is essential.

Staying Neat and Clean

Let’s face it, many items that need to be converted to digital files have not been kept in optimal conditions. Photographs may have tears or watermarks, and films or videos have likely not been kept in archival vaults. Add to this the problem with many video tapes — those plastic covers used by so many can contribute to causing more moisture to accumulate on the tapes. This can cause a gummy situation known as “sticky shed” that, if not handled properly, will make conversion impossible. Not only can sticky shed ruin videos, but it can also destroy any VCR used for conversion. Professional services, like ARS Video, understand how to deal with this issue. We have the proper equipment, materials, and expertise to deal with sticky shed and save memories on videotape.

The Out of the Ordinary

Film and video come in many different formats. Finding equipment to convert less popular film formats can take time and effort. Still, ARS Video can convert whatever format holds a family’s memories, including VHS, VHS-C, Hi-8, MicroMV and Betamax, MiniDV, DVCAM, HDV, Betacam SP, U-Matic Tape, and DVC Pro.

Color Us Happy

The chemicals used to show color in photographs, negatives, videos, and film can fade over time. The older the item being converted, the more likely that some form of color correction will be needed. If the plan is to convert files to digital and save the best version of each image, working with a professional video services company like ARS Video is essential. Professional color correction is nearly impossible to duplicate in a do-it-yourself effort.

Sounding Off

Just as preserving or enhancing color on converted items is a specialized skill, so is optimizing the sound for any film or video. Work with a professional who understands that memories should be seen and heard.

Staying Organized

Even the most organized do-it-yourselfer could get lost in a large digital conversion project. Working with a professional allows them to take their best practices and collaborate with each customer to develop a system that will allow for fast, easy retrieval of files once they are digitized. Since most programs that organize digital files have search capabilities, finding digitized pictures becomes much easier than searching through boxes in the back of a closet!

Memories In, Memories Out

In the process of digitizing, there are opportunities to edit and reuse those files. ARS Video can preserve the video of a child’s recital and edit out the reruns of Doogie Howser, MD, at the end of that tape. Plus, ARS Video’s expertise allows editing many memory files into one high-quality presentation that can be used to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, or other significant family milestones.

Why Digitizing is Important

Digitizing family memories has so many benefits. Years of accumulated photos, films, and videos can all be stored on a device as small as a flash drive. For additional safety, saving these files on the cloud means you’ll never have to worry about a fire, natural disaster, or de-cluttering to compromise your memories. Plus, you’ll be able to view and share these files from anywhere with an internet connection. Sharing family history becomes much easier on ancestry sites and social media. And with high-quality images, like those digitally preserved by ARS Video, anyone with access to these files can easily make their own prints in the size that works for them.

Memories are too significant and precious to trust to unqualified hands. Just because your uncle watched a few videos on YouTube about preservation doesn’t mean he can handle the scope of digitizing the most important memories for your family.

Why ARS Video?

Since we began preserving memories over 35 years ago, ARS Video has been a family-owned, high-tech company. Because of our experience, expertise, and focus on customer service, we understand the importance of every project entrusted to us.

There was a time when home movies were captured on film reels, just like the ones movie theaters used. While some aficionados had more robust cameras and captured events on a wider film, the average person wanting to make home movies used an 8mm camera. That in turn was then developed and returned from the store as an 8mm film in a matching canister. When it was time to watch the film, folks would set up a film projector on a table and gather round to watch fuzzy, jumpy movies with a lot of grain and dust bits, giving rise to the age-old image of home movie America.

That said, lots of folks are finding themselves stuck with old film reels, especially when it comes time to clean out an old closet or go through the estate of a loved one. And believe it or not, those 8mm films can be converted to a digital format to enjoy on today’s devices. You won’t need to scrounge around and look for the film projector as well (with technology that old, would it still work anyway?)

How to Convert 8mm Movie Film

It is technically possible to convert 8mm film yourself, but it is not recommended! Aside from the investment in time and equipment needed to make this happen, video quality can be lost in the process.

The easiest and most convenient way to convert 8mm films into a digital format is to utilize a service like A.R.S. Video. With state-of-the-art film conversion equipment, A.R.S. Video can even up-convert your film to a high-definiton format, ideal for playing on a modern TV.

Why Go with a Service Versus Home Equipment?

Yes, technically, a lot of home conversions can be self-done. However, doing the job really well only comes with experience, and the quality of the conversion equipment. Specialists who regularly develop and convert film do so a hundred times every week, working with the right equipment and knowing exactly how to adjust the settings for the right result. A.R.S. Video, for instance, has 35+ years of experience in video conversion.

If you have never worked on such equipment, you’re going to make a lot of mistakes at first, learning by trial and error. Would you really take the chance of makingDo you want your mistakes to be based on home movies that might be priceless family treasures? This is the risk. Where it really matters, going with a service may be the better choice, even if it does cost a bit more.

Think About Storage

Today, home movies are almost all made on mobile devices, most of which can fit in your pocket. Not only is the movie-making equipment smaller, but the amount of data that can be held on a phone far out-sizes anything 8mm reels could record in one session. In contrast, storing film reels can require lots of space on the shelf or in the closet.

From this perspective, converting film reels to digital is a smart idea and will help preserve the memories contained inside. However, once your film is converted to digital, it becomes important not to lose it! You’ll need to store the files on a computer, in your home storage, or on the cloud.

To provide you with peace of mind, A.R.S. Video backs up and archives your footage should you lose it or run into any issues. There is also “up-convert” footage which is done to fit on large screens without losing image quality. Either way, movies take up a lot of data converted to digital. If you don’t have the storage path figured out ahead of time, this could be a bit of a surprise. Anticipate that for every 8mm reel, you will need at least 5 gigabytes for every 800 feet of film (around 48 minutes.) For high definition, double that number, and for high resolution, Apple type conversions, triple the figure to almost 30 gigabytes.

8mm movies can be saved and developed with a bit of planning and choosing the path that makes the best sense for your realistic situation, time, and money. And you can always alternate. For museums, archivists, or others who have a large collection of films, you will save significant time and ensure quality and peace of mind by using a service like A.R.S. Video.

Or, if you want to learn how to develop your own, use some 8mm film that you’re not worried about damaging and can practice with. However, considering the time needed and the necessary investment in home equipment, is it worth the difference in quality?

The friendly team at A.R.S. Video is standing by to help with advice to help you get your film ready for conversion or recovery. If you would like to learn more about how we can carefully convert your film while preserving the original footage, please contact us in Tallmadge, OH today!

If you are an owner or collector of VHS tapes and movies, you want to protect your own investment in this area of entertainment.

Here is something to consider. There have not been any new VHS tapes produced in more than a decade. In fact, no movies are made onto VHS tapes at all anymore.

Do you know the name of the last movie that went on a VHS tape cassette?

We have that answer and more here at ARS Video.

Find out what that final film was to be put out on VHS and see if you have it in your VHS library and movie collection.

What is the Name of the Last Movie on VHS

Without any further suspense, the final movie that was put out on a VHS tape cassette for the general public was titled A History of Violence.

What a shocking name for a movie to hold such a record!

Why did they choose this movie to be the last one to go to the VHS version of film production?

It really does make you wonder about why they chose this particular movie, considering the context and gravity of not producing VHS movies anymore.

However, that is the name of the movie and it was produced and released by David Cronenberg.

The movie was based on a book, a graphic novel with the same title. The book version was authored by Josh Olson.

The film adaptation is considered to be an action thriller and stars the popular actor, Viggo Mortensen.

The action thriller was finished a year before it was released on VHS tape, which we will cover in a moment.

About A History of Violence

A History of Violence is a story about a restaurant owner, played by Mortensen, who lives in Indiana in a rural town.

There Mortensen, who acts as Tom Stall, lives with his wife and their two children.

His wife is played by Maria Bello, and the story gets right into when Stall gets into a situation with some would-be robbers at his restaurant.

It is more like an old-fashioned diner, rather than a restaurant if that helps you any.

The story continues when Stall commits murder out of self-defense against these criminals.

As you can imagine, the story is violent, and the movie maintains this thriller vibe throughout the film.

While not a huge success, the movie features some popular actors and actresses that are interesting to some.

The Year: 2006

When did this movie, A History of Violence, get released onto VHS tape?

The date was March 14, and the year 2006 was when the last film was released on a VHS tape.

Viewers had been watching movies on DVD and Blu-Ray for so long that they were now going to be able to go without new VHS movies and still had plenty of a selection to choose from.

Also, technology was advanced beyond VHS, and VHS tape players and recorders were also becoming obsolete.

As a result, the choice of movie studios was made, and the final VHS movie was produced, A History of Violence.

Restoring a VHS Movie

If you have a copy of A History of Violence on a VHS tape, it is a good investment to have this tape restored.

By restoring your VHS tapes, you can remove any dirt or bacteria, and regain the near-original state of the tape and cassette box.

However, you may still be unable to watch the movie from the VHS tape.

Therefore, it is a good idea to have the movie transferred over to a digital version for your viewing pleasure.

You can still hang on to your now vintage copy of A History of Violence and save this for prosperity’s sake.

After all, there will never be another movie made on VHS by a movie studio.

This is the last one!

If you need film restoration services click here, we do it all!

FILM

8mm and Super 8 FILM were popular from 1940 to 1980. The film is on a reel and played back on a projector displayed on a screen. If you were to hold the film up to a light you would see tiny picture on it. Each 3 inch reel plays for about 4 minutes. Often times people spliced the 3 inch reels onto larger reels so they would not have to rewind and reload so often.

VIDEO

Regular8, Hi8 and Digital8 (D8) VIDEO were popular in the 1990 and early 2000s. The cameras were small and recorded up to 2 hours. The tapes looked the same for all 3 formats. If you were to hold it up to a light you would not see tiny pictures. 2 things to know are

1) You must have a compatible 8mm video player to play them back and not every player/camcorder will play all 3 video formats. For example, if you play back a D8 in a Regular8 or Hi8 machine you will only see static.

2) There was never an adapter made to play them in a VHS machine. You need to connect the yellow, red and white wires that came with the camcorder to the VCR. There was an adapter made to play a VHS-C video tape in a VHS player but NOT for any of the 8mm formats.

Knowing this will save you a lot of time and frustration if you are trying to convert the tapes to digital files.

One last thing to know, if it is on a reel that looks like film, but is a brown colored tape without pictures on it, it is an audio reel to reel – no video and requires a special reel to reel player.
