During the late 1980s, the 8MM format, also known as Video 8 or Regular 8, gained popularity for its enhanced quality and extended recording time compared to VHS-C. This format evolved first into Hi8 (or Hi-8) and subsequently into D8 (also referred to as Digital8 or D-8) while still utilizing the same tape. Measuring approximately 3.7 by 2.4 inches, the tape was roughly the size of an audio cassette. Despite its widespread use, the reign of this format concluded around 2005, giving way to MiniDVs. Although these formats were highly favored for video recording during their time, the memories captured on these old tapes won’t last forever.
This same video tape could be used to record 8mm, Hi-8 or D8 in the 1990s to early 2000s.
Regarding recording capacity, both the 8MM and Hi-8 formats could capture up to two hours of footage on a single tape. In contrast, the later Digital8 format had a recording capability of one hour per tape. However, the magnetic tape used in these formats was not designed for indefinite preservation. When these tapes were first created, the expected duration for each was only about 20 years.

You can get started with the shipping process by downloading our packing slip to include with your materials. Simply fill out all the fields in the form and slip it into your package for us to reference in case we have any questions.
We will go through your footage meticulously, timing out each tape and checking for TV shows/commercials or blank videos that we will not transfer. We then total the number of hours and apply a 10% quantity discount at 10 hours and 25% at 25 hours. Finally, we’ll contact you with the total price of our conversion services for your approval before we begin.
Using the latest equipment, your video is upscaled to High-Definition files – 1920 x 1080P 29.97 MP4 for consumer TVs and 1920 x 1080P 59.94 MOV for editors.
The digital files are returned to you on one USB Flash Drive that is included in the price, additional copies are just the price of the USB Flash Drive. When you plug in the Flash Drive to your TV or Computer there will be a list of all the videos as they were labeled on the tapes. You can make copies yourself and upload them to Google Drive, YouTube or your preferred Cloud service for streaming.
All the original tapes will be returned to you. We will also back up the files on-site in case you need another copy. DVD and Blu-Ray copies can be made if you would like as well.
