In the late 1980s a format called 8MM also called Video 8 or Regular 8 became popular because of the superior quality and longer record time over VHS-C. The Video 8 recording format was upgraded to Hi8 also called Hi-8 and again to D8 or Digital8 or D-8 all on the same tape! The tape is about 3.7 inches by 2.4 inched, roughly similar to an audio cassette. It finally ended its run around 2005 with MiniDV taking over. It was a popular video format, but memories stored on any of these tape formats won’t last forever.

The 8MM and Hi-8 formats recorded 2 hours on one tape and the later Digital8 format recorded one hour. The magnetic tape used for this format was not intended to last forever in fact 20 years is all that was expected.

We can transfer these tapes to modern High-definition (1920 x 1080P) MP4 digital files starting today.
